The Science of Ginkgo Biloba There is quite a large volume of scientific proof supporting the use of this amazing plant. The Ginkgo leaf extract has been reported to have neuroprotective, anti-cancer, cardio-protective, stress alleviating, and memory-enhancing effects. Gingko is believed to work as an anti-oxidant and fights free radicals. In addition, it functions as an anti-platelet agent and lessens blood clotting incidences. The scientific support of Ginkgo is quite impressive. For instance, in a study, a battery of cognitive or brain tests, and measurements of mood and menopausal symptoms were assessed. The group treated with Ginkgo was significantly better than the group that did not take Ginkgo. One study assessed the efficacy and safety of Ginkgo Biloba for the treatment of patients with dementia or cognitive decline. They concluded that Ginkgo Biloba appears to be safe in use with no excess side effects. Overall there is promising evidence of improvement in cognition and function associated with Ginkgo. Another group of scientists conducted a clinical trial in which participants were administered a battery of validated neuropsychological tests before and after treatment. Statistical analysis indicated significant improvements in speed of information processing, working memory and executive processing attributable to the herb. |
